Pausing ProjectPaneTreeHighlighter

Hello,

Is there a way to pause and resume the ProjectPaneTreeHighlighter (error checking, looking for vcs changes) for a project while performing calculations and changing the model automatically? With many changes occurring, my impression is that this considerably slows down and keeps the editor busy due to a long queue of actions, up to several minutes after the calculation is finished.
